A Five-Minute Boundary Script You Can Use Today

Most people don’t struggle with boundaries because they don’t know what they want. They struggle because they don’t have the words ready in the moment it matters. Here’s a script you can actually use.

The Three-Part Structure

Say what you can do, not just what you can’t. “I can’t do Saturday, but I could do Tuesday afternoon” lands completely differently than a flat no, and it takes the same five seconds to say. Keep the reason short or leave it out. You don’t owe a full explanation for protecting your own time, and over-explaining usually just invites negotiation. Let the silence sit. After you’ve said it, stop talking. The urge to fill the silence with an apology is strong — resist it.

Try It on Something Small First

Don’t practice this script for the first time on the highest-stakes conversation in your life. Use it on something low-risk this week — declining an extra task at work, or telling a friend you can’t make an event. The goal is to get your body used to saying the words calmly before you need them for something that matters more.

What to Expect Afterward

A little discomfort is normal, even when you’ve said nothing wrong. That discomfort usually fades within a day. If it doesn’t, it’s worth asking whether the relationship itself, not just this one boundary, needs a closer look.
